Above you can see two charts pulled from "The Google Trends" platform. The platform shows people's search activity throughout the time for a given keyword. With these two charts we are comparing people's interest in AI vs Crypto.
Crypto hype
Looking at the right-side chart, we can see that around 2015 we have the very beginning of the crypto hype. Back in that time, everyone was starting to talk about blockchain, crypto, and bitcoin. Most of the new startups were crypto startups that aimed to revolutionize any industry with blockchain technology. Even governments were discussing how to regulate cryptocurrencies. Valuations of crypto companies, crypto exchanges, and cryptocurrencies were growing exponentially. Until the hype faded away.
AI hype
Now looking at the left-side chart, we can observe a massive surge in interest in AI at around 2020-2021. Comparing two keywords "AI" and "ChatGPT" reveals a very interesting correlation, where it seems, that ChatGPT has sparked the frenzy around AI. And now (as compared to crypto back in 2015) everyone is talking about AI, most of the new startups are AI startups that aim to revolutionize all industries using AI, governments attempt to regulate AI, and valuations of tech companies are through the roof [1]. AI hype looks and feels very similar to Crypto hype. It seems that all hypes sooner or later fade, such should be the similar case of AI as well.
P.S.
The article does not try to compare AI technology vs Crypto technology, instead, it compares AI hype vs Crypto hype. AI, as a technology, is far more influential and revolutionary, compared to Crypto technology. AI, as a technology, will continue to grow and produce more and more capable models.
